A Tasty Treat for a Healthy Beat

A Tasty Treat for a Healthy Beat

It’s not often we talk about dessert, but we truly *heart* this treat. It’s delicious and easy to prepare - simply sweeten your own plain, low-fat yogurt and top with blueberries, cacao nibs, almond butter (mixed with more cacao), hemp seeds, mixed nuts, and a dash cinnamon.

Why is it a heart-healthy snack? Fill up your bowl, and we'll fill you in!

Plain, organic low-fat yogurt with stevia

The probiotics in yogurt can aid in lowering blood cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as improve the heart’s ability to metabolize energy.

Note that saturated fats from dairy can increase “bad” LDL cholesterol, so choosing low-fat dairy options like siggi’s, or selecting a coconut milk yogurt will keep this blend in check. Also, be sure to opt for plain yogurt vs. flavored - adding your own sweetener will shave off unnecessary grams of sugar.

Blueberries

Blueberries contain flavonoids called anthocyanins and other antioxidants that decrease blood pressure and promote heart health.

Cacao nibs

Dark chocolate contains flavonols, which improve blood vessel flexibility, reduce blood pressure, and lower risk for cardiovascular disease.

Almond butter (mixed with more cacao, if you wish)

Almonds help to lower LDL cholesterol, as they contain plant sterols that reduce cholesterol absorption.

Organic mixed nuts

Walnuts, macadamia nuts, and pecans are also good choices for nuts - the healthy, unsaturated fats help to lower LDL cholesterol and increase the “good" HDL cholesterol, decreasing the risk for heart disease.

Hemp seeds

Hemp seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, which provide for a myriad of heart-healthy effects. Additionally, they are comprised of a variety of minerals and an amino acid called arginine, which may be linked to reduced inflammation and lowered risk of heart disease.

Cinnamon

Studies suggest that the cinnamaldehyde, the compound that gives cinnamon its flavor and odor, may have protective effects on the cardiovascular system. This makes cinnamon the perfect heart-healthy ingredient for a final touch of flavor!
